The Shared System, a service of The Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL), helps schools meet students’ and teachers’ demand for current, high-quality fiction and informational texts. Thanks to a common catalog and a book delivery service, the 91 libraries in the Shared System function much like IndyPL’s branches. Teachers and students borrow materials from the public library, public library patrons request materials from schools and schools borrow materials from each other. In a time when library resources are limited and public entities are encouraged to realize efficiencies through collaboration, IndyPL recognizes its important role in supporting school libraries.
In addition, the Library serves as a vital access point to resources available for reference at three Indianapolis museums (Newfields, the Eiteljorg, and the Indiana Medical History Museum), and to special collections of materials available on site or by request from the BJE Maurer Jewish Community Library and the Riley Hospital for Children.
